A key component to successfully achieve broad market penetration of renewable energy systems includes the development of new electrical energy storage technologies. Operational changes to the grid, due to restructuring of the electric utility industry, also has led to a multifaceted opportunity for storage with potentially a significant value proposition. The value drivers behind storage arise from the numerous complementary benefits that can be aggregated into an effective cost solution that provides flexibility and reliability to grid stakeholders. Performance requirements for such systems depend on application markets that are broad in power and energy ratings, the power to energy ratio, and the time factor for storing and releasing energy.  However, implementation of new electrical energy storage technologies require major breakthroughs in materials science, chemistry and systems design to further improve performance and cycle life while remaining cost competitive with fossil fuel and other energy storage system. One large group of grid-based within energy storage technology is electrochemical energy storage, also known as batteries.  Electrochemical devices make attractive storage reservoirs, due to their charge-discharge reversibility and high round-trip efficiencies. Thus, a number of battery technologies have been developed over the last century and some have been demonstrated for grid applications.  Currently, most proven battery technologies are cost-prohibitive for wide spread grid use, although recent improvements indicate that batteries may yet become a cost-effective utility resource. In this presentation, we present a broad overview of grid requirements, along with cost effective storage platforms recently supported by ARPA-E. Additionally, the author’s will present results from his development programs for “sodium-β’’ and other batteries for vehicle and storage.


Dr. John P. Lemmon is Chief Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and is currently serving as a Program Director for DOE APRA-E. In his ARPA-E role he has developed and leads programs in the areas of both grid storage and distributed generation technologies. As a member of the DOE BES Energy Storage Hub Team, Dr. Lemmon’s research goals seek to understand fundamental charge transfer processes at the atomic, molecular and macro dimensions that includes performance evaluation in multi-component devices for real world applications related to renewable energy. Prior to joining PNNL, Dr. Lemmon spent 13 years at General Electric Global Research as a Senior Staff Scientist leading the development of materials and devices for power generation and energy storage. He has over 60 literature articles and 50 US granted patents with 14 pending, several which are in energy storage technologies. Dr. Lemmon is a member of the ACS, MRS, ASM and Electrochemical Society.
